Twitter trolls Trump’s Asian ‘grimace, grin, grip’ handshake

Sheetal Sukhija - Tuesday 14th November, 2017

MANILA, Philippines - U.S. President Donald Trump gave the internet some giggles amid the seriousness of his 13-day Asia trip, after he grimaced and grinned at the same time as he figured out a traditional handshake.

The weird moment came during the opening ceremony of the Association for Southeast Asian Nations conference.

When the group photo of the leaders with the summit’s traditional handshake was to be held, Trump was baffled at whether he should place his arms, leading to a hilarious moment for the shutterbugs.

The cross-body handshake involves each leader shaking the opposite hands of those next to them.

Trump, who is known for his long, and at times aggressive, handshakes with world leaders, heard the announcement, looked around and then turned to the leaders who flanked him, including Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to his right, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to his left and simply extended his arms outward.

But when it was Trump’s turn to get into position, the U.S. President laughed and grimaced, before figuring out where to place his arms.

As is the case with such moments, the Twitterati were quick to notice the awkwardness of it all and the trolls and meme-machines got into play, leading to the incident, along with photographic proof of the hilarious incident.

One person said on Twitter, “What. The. Hell. Is. Happening,” while another said, “Good luck to whoever has three weeks to get this regional production of Mamma Mia! into shape.”

Meanwhile, another user said, “Guess he never played twister?” and another said, “This is what peak performance looks like.”
